Sewer Pipe Lining & CIPP
Cured-in-place pipe, sewer relining, trenchless pipe lining — one method, several names.
See If Pipe Lining May Be an OptionSewer pipe lining installs a new pipe inside the existing one. A flexible liner saturated with resin is pulled or inverted into the cleaned host pipe, pressed against the pipe wall, and cured until it hardens into a continuous jointless pipe. The industry term is cured-in-place pipe, usually shortened to CIPP.
Sewer relining, trenchless pipe lining, CIPP lining and cured-in-place pipe all describe this same family of work. Where a defect is limited to a short section, the same technique is used as a sectional or spot liner instead of lining the full run.
How CIPP lining works
The finished liner is a structural pipe in its own right. That is why preparation matters as much as the product: the liner takes the shape of whatever it is cured against.
- The liner is measured to the recorded length and diameter of the host pipe.
- Resin is saturated into the liner (wet-out) shortly before installation.
- The liner is inverted with air or water pressure, or winched into position.
- It is held against the pipe wall while it cures — ambient, hot water, steam or UV, depending on the system.
- Reinstated connections and the finished bore are verified by camera.
When this method fits — and when it doesn't
Honest suitability is the fastest way to avoid paying twice. Use this to sanity-check any quote you receive.
Usually a good fit
- Cracked, corroded or root-infiltrated pipe that still holds its shape
- Clay tile with open joints where roots repeatedly return
- Cast iron laterals with scale and channelling but intact walls
- Lines under driveways, sidewalks, patios and mature trees
- Properties where the run is long but reasonably straight and continuous
Often the wrong choice
- Collapsed sections with no host pipe left to line against
- Large offsets or separated joints where the liner would bridge into open soil
- Significant bellies — a liner follows the sag rather than correcting grade
- Lines already undersized for the fixtures they serve, where losing wall thickness matters
- Some multiple sharp bends or fittings, depending on the liner system used
What the job actually looks like

- 22. CleaningHydro jetting, root cutting and descaling. This is the step most often rushed, and the most common cause of liner defects.
- 33. Re-inspectionA second camera pass after cleaning shows the true pipe condition, not the condition hidden under debris.
- 44. Measurement and wet-outThe liner is cut to length and saturated with resin under controlled conditions.

What moves the price
- Length lined
- The dominant factor. Full-length lining costs several times a single spot repair.
- Diameter
- Larger diameter liners cost more per foot in both material and equipment.
- Cleaning effort
- Heavy roots, hardened scale or grease may require multiple jetting and cutting passes.
- Access
- Whether a usable cleanout exists, or one has to be installed first.
- Curing method
- UV and steam systems cost more to mobilize than ambient cure but reduce site time.
- Reinstatements
- Each branch connection that has to be reopened adds work.
- Local requirements
- Permits, licensed plumber requirements and required inspections differ by municipality.
What affects liner lifespan
Liner manufacturers commonly publish a 50-year design life, and the trenchless industry generally treats CIPP as a long-term rehabilitation rather than a patch. That number describes the product under proper installation conditions — it is not a guarantee about any particular job.
- Thoroughness of cleaning before installation
- Correct resin ratio, wet-out quality and cure temperature or exposure
- Whether the host pipe was actually a suitable candidate
- Ground movement, heavy root pressure and future excavation near the line
- Whether reinstated connections were cut cleanly
Lining or bursting?
The short version: lining rehabilitates a pipe that still exists; pipe bursting replaces a pipe that no longer performs. If the camera shows a continuous host pipe with cracks and root intrusion, lining is usually on the table. If it shows collapse, separation or a wrong grade, replacement usually is.
