Pipe bursting is a trenchless replacement method. A bursting head is pulled through the existing sewer line by cable or rod. The head fractures the old pipe outward into the surrounding soil while pulling a new pipe — usually fused HDPE — into the space behind it.

The distinction from pipe lining matters: lining keeps the old pipe and rebuilds it from the inside, while bursting destroys it and leaves a new pipe in its place. Bursting can also upsize the line, which lining cannot.

How pipe bursting works

  • An insertion pit is dug at one end of the run and a receiving pit at the other.
  • New HDPE pipe is heat-fused into a single continuous length on site.
  • A cable or rod string is run through the old line.
  • The bursting head is pulled through under high force, splitting the old pipe outward.
  • The new pipe follows immediately behind the head.
  • Connections are made at both ends and the finished line is camera-verified.

When this method fits — and when it doesn't

Honest suitability is the fastest way to avoid paying twice. Use this to sanity-check any quote you receive.

Usually a good fit

  • Collapsed, crushed or severely deteriorated lines that cannot be lined
  • Lines that need to be upsized for capacity
  • Clay or Orangeburg lines at the end of their service life
  • Long runs where a full open trench would destroy driveway, hardscape or landscaping
  • Cases where a homeowner wants a new pipe rather than a rehabilitated one

Often the wrong choice

  • Lines running very close to other utilities that could be damaged by soil displacement
  • Some point repairs, where bursting the whole run is unnecessary
  • Situations where no room exists for insertion and receiving pits
  • Ductile or reinforced pipe that will not fracture predictably, depending on the equipment used
  • Lines where the existing alignment itself is the problem and grade must be re-established

What moves the price

Run length
Priced per foot, plus the fixed cost of mobilizing bursting equipment.
Pit depth
Deep pits require more excavation, shoring and restoration — often the single biggest variable.
Pipe size and upsizing
Larger new pipe means more material and more soil displacement force.
Utility congestion
Gas, water and electric near the line may require hand digging, potholing or a different method.
Surface restoration
Concrete, pavers, driveway and sidewalk restoration at the pit locations.
Permits and inspections
Replacement work generally triggers permits and inspection requirements from the municipality.
Street work
If a pit falls in the right-of-way, street opening and traffic control requirements add cost.

Pipe bursting vs CIPP lining

These two methods answer different questions. Use the condition of the pipe, not the marketing, to choose.

  • Host pipe required: lining needs one; bursting does not.
  • Diameter: lining slightly reduces it; bursting can keep or increase it.
  • Grade: lining preserves existing alignment including sags; bursting broadly follows the old path but installs new pipe.
  • Digging: lining may work from an existing cleanout; bursting needs two pits.
  • Result: lining gives a rehabilitated jointless liner; bursting gives a new fused HDPE pipe.
  • Typical trigger: cracks and roots point to lining; collapse, separation or capacity problems point to bursting.

When replacement is the better answer

Rehabilitation is attractive when the existing pipe is a usable shell. Once a line has lost that — crushed sections, separated joints, an Orangeburg pipe that has deformed, or a lateral that is simply undersized — money spent on lining can be money spent twice.

A good specialist will show you the footage and explain which of these applies. If the recommendation is replacement, the reasonable follow-up questions are: can it be burst rather than trenched, where do the pits go, and what surface has to be restored?
